Paul is originally from way up north, solid 10 minutes, was a part of the first graduating class of North Linn High School.
Paul served in the Army from 1969-1972 with a tour in Vietnam. He was a combat engineer, bridge builder, and ended up as a clerk overseas. Needless to say talking with Paul is like most of us veterans, the experiences, stories and humor we find with each other is different from everyone else and usually kept between us.
Paul retired from the county, you know back when it would snow 10 feet, the plows would come out and all we would get is a two hour late start. Blame him for that, these days a week of school would be called off. Anyone that knows his son Derrick, it's obvious that Paul was a great father that taught his kid well. Paul also has a couple grandchildren in high school.
Mr Schantz spends time with the Freedom Foundation, which is a charitable organization for Veterans. They have meals, food pantry, help with doctor visits, bill paying and an assortment of resources for Veterans in need. Very admirable to volunteer his time. Paul has been a Legion member for over 40 years. He is without a doubt one of our members that is always there for good advice, well, more so a story or two from back in the day that will make you laugh but there definitely has been some good advice along the way.
Unfortunately for us, fortunately for him, he snowbirds down to Arizona every winter. Soaking up some spring training while he's down there. Paul, and I'm very jealous of this, has been to every Major League baseball stadium except for two. Miami and Tampa he has not been to. It's safe to say he enjoys baseball.
Mr Schantz is a great asset to our Legion and community, please join me and thanking him for his service and volunteer efforts to help out others.
Thanks Paul
