The Center Point American Legion would like to announce our April Veteran of the Month.
Congratulations to Larry Garetson!
Larry joined the Army Reserves in 1968. He went to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO for basic training, and then on to Ft. Sam Houston for his AIT (Advanced Individual Training) as a medic. He was assigned to the 301st Field Hospital. Most of his enlistment he spent his days working in the hospital. He discharged as an E-5 in 1972.
Larry was born in Aurora, IA. He moved to a farm around Center Point in 1990. He has been farming corn, soybeans, hay, and raising cattle for the past 38 years, with his wife Dee and their four children helping him. After his service, Larry also worked at Rockwell in phones and communications, and retired with 46 years under his belt. He enjoys fishing and rebuilding John Deere tractors to use on his farm.
An interesting fact about his life, Larry’s son retired from the Navy after 21 years. While his son served on the submarine the USS Ohio, Larry was able to participate in two Tiger cruises in the Atlantic Ocean. Larry and 52 other civilians were able to experience life on a submarine for a few days with their active duty family members. He was able to see how his son and other crew members worked, ate, and slept.
Please join us in thanking Larry for his service to our country. Congratulations and thank you, Larry!
