Mr Burris spent 4 years in total with the Navy, 1966-1970. 1967-69 he was stationed out of Yokosuka, Japan. During that tenure he was doing rotations in Vietnam. Mr Burris was part of the Navy Beach Masters, running amphibious operations in South Vietnam clearing the way for landing craft, Marines, supplies, artillery, you name it. Without a doubt an extremely important job. A break in the lines is a break in the fighting force as a whole.
While Mr Burris shared a few stories, I won't share the one about him almost missing his flight home from Vietnam. I absolutely will not share him and a buddy were told about a shack down the road at the airfield that apparently had beer when they were waiting to leave. Definitely won't divulge they went down to that shack and when they came back, the airplane was not just there to take them home, but the props were going and it was moving towards take off. So yes, Mr Burris and his buddy not only had to run the plane down, they had to toss their seabags in the door and jump in, as it was moving, taxing to the runway, to take them home from Vietnam.
Honestly one of the best military stories I've heard.
Once he got on the plane and back home, Greg went back to work for Farmstead/Wilson, where he worked prior and worked after till it closed down. He then went on to work at International Paper.
Mr Burris has two children, 3 granddaughters.
Him and his wife have a camper they will pull around a bit, seems like Door County up in Wisconsin is a preferred landing spot. Cannot blame them there. They also get in a few card games with their neighbors Don and Carol Hatch. Greg has a few cows he takes care of with Barry Hatch, passes the time well.
One very interesting item, Greg is a member of the Garrison post, his grandfather was a charter member up at the Garrison Legion, that is very awesome, congratulations and thank you to his Grandfather as well.
Now please join the Center Point Legion and thank Mr Greg Burris for his service to our country and being our Mr July Veteran of the Month!
Thank you
