Congratulations to Donald (Don) Washburn.
Don enlisted in the Marine Corp. in 1963 under a delayed enlistment until 1964 when he went onto active duty, stationed at Camp Del Mar in San Diego CA. He joined through the buddy program and served as a Message Center Operator. While on active duty, Don was called back home under a hardship discharge to help take care of the family farm. After getting the farm under control, he decided to join the Army Reserves out of Iowa City for a 1-year enlistment.
Aside from being a veteran, Don has been an integral part of the American Legion for 58 years. First joining the Troy Mills legion to help honor his father, he then joined the Center Point American Legion where he served as our Commander for 2 years and has help with so many activities and functions that we support.
He somehow finds the time to help out with the American Legion, even with such a large family of 3 children, 9 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
One memorable moment he had during his service was when Jim Neighbors (Gomer Pyle) was filming at their base, and he was able to see him in person during the filming. In regard to his time with the American Legion, he stated “I’m extremely proud of what the Center Point Legion has become, I look forward to all the additional things we will be doing for the area in the future.”
Please join us in thanking Don for not only for being a veteran, but for serving this community for so long with the American Legion. Congratulations and thank you Don!
